Cultural Voices Homework

Yes, I know you are going to be on vacation, however, there are a few items that we were not able to squeeze into our lessons.   You have clearly signed on for a great deal; I give you a great deal of credit.   I hope that you've found our lessons thus far to be relevant and thought provoking.  Have a wonderful vacation!

    Hi , my name is Dwayne

    in life people do things for a reason rather it's standing up for what other , or for a cause. Now I want to go in to discuss this topic I read about on the web page nickalon and I quot " do we need black history mouth" now as a person who is black and native American this up sets me because to many people have died for equal rIghts.. Black history mouth is a day where we can prays all are black brother and sister for doing something positive in life and for making new inventtions for are would to become a better place..

    The thing about race is that everybody is not the same, people believe in many different thing rather it food, clothes , or religous beliefs people weren't meet to be the same or we all would be walking a round like zombies lol.... But some people define race as the color of your skin rather it be white, black, yellow, blue, or red . My point is race is a good thing because that what makes are society diverse..

    Hi Dwayne,

    Thank you for your insightful comments. Were you able to view the clip? I'm sorry that it upset you, that was not my intent. There were a few reasons that I chose that particular topic. First, I like the dialogue between the panel of students on a controversial topic. They definitely set a great example. Another reason that I decided to share the clip is because they share information about people who tend to get pushed to the side during Black History Month. Lastly, I wanted to know what my students thought. I wish you could have been there for the conversation with my students who were able to view the clip in class. Thanks again for your comments. I hope that you are having a restful vacation.

    Hey, this is Yadira. So, I saw the video on Nick and I found it very interesting because I think that everyone needs a week or a month to celebrate each race because everyone, plays a role in American history. I'm not Black, I'm Hispanic and I know that there is a month that celebrates the Hispanics but why can everyone talk about Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, etc everyday, to learn more about their culture and history? I mean, I have my own history and I have learned the American History and I appreciate it very much. So do we need black history month? yess !!Black Americans have played an important role in the American history, fighting for equality, etc so everyone deserves to know, explore, and celebrate Black History Month.

    regarding the video clip on the the nickalodeon web page called "Do We Need Black History Month" speaking as a fellow African american i find it somewhat offensive because why would you want to take away the only month that blacks have. Bad enough its already in the shortest month ,but everything you hear and see in the media seems to portray blacks as only being bad or negative.

    My reaction to the video was surprising, I don't know why even they would ask that question. Of course we need black history month, we all have history in us to remember the great stuff occurring. And i also agree with some statements from the girls that they picked the shortest month of the season to represent. Like Dwayne said, we are all not the same, we all have a little bit of diverse culture in us, the way we eat, dress, and act. We need to stop judging people by its cover.

I believe black history month should happen for a lots of reasons. first we have to think about what they have done for this nation and the people. second think about the hard work they have done for all the people of color. Now if you think they don't have the right to be rememberd then think again before you speak

    On the second website talks about race. Well I believe having race is a really good thing because you have the chance to learn about different people, cultures, religions and many more. Also I believe race is a good thing because looking at the same person everyday and being around the same people don't really open your eyes to new things.

    I can understand the idea of dissolving Black History Month, but only in the place of a better alternative. The only way our country will ever overcome racism and racist tendencies is through erasing the different labels that we assign to different groups. By having a designated Black History Month, we are limiting black history to that month and are thus justifying its exclusion from a normal curriculum. By just existing, Black History Month implies that all OTHER months are white history month. All months ought to be a mix, without a specific emphasis on just one race for one twelfth of the year.

    I think that the video was actually a bore. There is no reason that black history month should not be celebrated, it's a reminder to people that African Americans have gone through a lot in this country and that they have also contributed a lot.
