Hello. I'm Mrs. Iodice, Mrs. Benedetto's partner for this course, and I wanted to share that every time our class does the King Kong activity, I learn something new - thanks to all of you!
ReplyDeleteHi, I am Lizzie Sturtz. I am a junior at Nottingham. I joined this class because people who took it before told me it was enjoyable and the field trips were nice. The definition activity wasn't surprising because I have often seen white and black as symbolism for good and evil.

Hello. My name is Yadira Junco but you can call me Yadi. I've enrolled in this course basically because in this class there is the opportunity to go to other school and be part of that school for a day and vice versa when the other students come to our school. The dictionary activity was very interesting because there are positive and negative definitions of a word. The King Kong activity made me think a lot about the true meaning of some characters, objects, or even colors in a movie because they always represent something. I'll definitely look differently at movies now. YJunco
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Christine Mooney. I am a junior at Nottingham. Most of my friends have already taken this course and have said only good things about it. They really enjoyed the field trips and felt that they took much away from class discussions and the course in general, which made me think about joining cultural voices, as well.
ReplyDeleteIn the dictionary activity, I thought it was interesting to realize that bias and connotations existed in text as dry as dictionary definitions.
I had never seen any of King Kong before the activity, but I was not all that surprised with how they represented the savages, as many other movies have used the same tactics. I did think it was interesting to see the similarities and differences between the 1933 and 2003 versions.

HI, My name is Tyler Barnes i take cultural voices at Nottingham high school. I'm taking this course because i want to discuss the issues of racism especially because i am mixed with a lot of different races and seeing and hearing the stereotypes really bother me. After watching the King Kong video and doing the dictionary activity i realized that racism is present in everything and the subtle racism really effects peoples opinion on race.
ReplyDeleteHello!!
ReplyDeleteI'm Ja'Leasa Worley, i am currently taking cultural voices at Nottingham High School. i enrolled in this course because i found it interesting. In addition I thought it would be a good course because of my race.
- when Mrs. Benedetto gave us the definitions of white and black it was coll because you seen the differences between the two words. i also learned things i never knew. I thought the the king kong activity symbolized a lot of things.

hey,
ReplyDeletemy name is Dwayne and i joined this class because i want to learn more about other people and to see how different my school is different form other school and to gain some friends. when i hear the words race to me it mean like the color of somebody's skin or what they look like, but sometimes what you believe in can define you, by your race or what your belief is.

ReplyDeleteHi!I'm Naomi i'm a freshman at nottingham highschool and i am taking this course because it seemed like something that i could really learn a lot of things from and also because it looks good on college applications.
ReplyDeleteMy reaction to the activities that we did were one of recognition because i know the definitions that the dictionary has for white and black and how different they are. Some of them can be considered racist. I was also angry when i watched King Kong because as a person coming from Congo it was ridiculous to me how they portraid them. The movie denegrated their culture and that really upset me.
Hello, Im J.Lyons, A Senior at Nottingham and I feel that the King Kong activity symbolized alot on how people did racial profiling
ReplyDeleteI think we need black history month because it celebrates what has been accomlished over the years by the great leaders. I would have liked to have taken a course on black american history.
ReplyDeleteYahumara Aguirre

ReplyDeleteAnyways my name is Yahumara Aguirre but you can call me mara i joined the cultural voices class because it's about culture and i find it really interesting and cool class and i want people to hear my opinion. the definition activity was odd because i had my own definition and other other end it was way different than the dictionary.
Hi, my name is renaldo memelli and im a senior at nottingham high school. My reaction to the dictionary was intesting, when it asked us to define culture in your own words and definition from the dictionary, we all knew definitions from both perspectives because we know alittle bit from each and everyones culture. Unfortunantely i was not here for the king kong activity due to something important and i apologize greatly for it.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Forrest Law. I am a junior at fm and I joined rhetoric of race because I've heard a lot of good things about it and I have friends who have taken it at fm and a friend who took cultural voices at Nottingham. I was surprised at all the racist symbolism in king kong that I didn't notice when I saw it the first time.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Meg, I'm a senior at FM, i took this class becasue i feel like its an opportunity to take a class i may never be able to experience again. I think the King Kong activity made us realize how much the media plays into the portral of race.

Hi!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Erin Fauer and I am a senior at FM. This year, I am a teaching Assistant! I really love this class because you get to talk about issues that you are not normally that comfortable talking about! When we do activities, we get to see other people's perspectives on what is going on, and that is something you would not normally get to experience.
Hello, my name is Helena Chiles, and I'm a senior from FM. I was really suprised by how widely circulated racist imagery is, even today. Whether the producers of King Kong intended the film to racist or not, is insignificant, but the way the public subliminally absorbs the information is the more dangerous aspect.
ReplyDeleteHello myy name is Elyssa and im a junior at Fayetteville Manlius. I was surprised by the King Kong video to see all the imagery. The imagery is still shown today even as seen in the modern King Kong.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Andrew Fletcher and I am a junior at F-M. I took rhetoric of race becuase I've heard it was a great expirence and I wanted to learn to see things in a different way. The king Kong activity was interesting becuase it had racial imagry that i would not notice the first time around. It help me realize that there is tons of symbols that represent race.
ReplyDeleteHi! My name is Fareya Zubair and I am a junior at FM. This is my second time taking the course, and I decided to take it twice because it such an eye-opening course and always changing with new topics. Discussion is always great and interesting. My reaction to King Kong was that it was a very strange movie, and although when you watch it for fun, it seems fine. But when you closely examine it, you see all of these racial images that are so blatant. It's really sad because these movies which are so popular can reaffirm stereotypes that we are trying to break down.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is randy im a sophmore at FM highschool. I entered this class because as a black male theres many sterotypes going against me and this calss helps me speek freely about those certain subjects. My reaction to the dictonary was speechless or confused to see how differtently they express black and white. my reaction to the king kong video was eye opening i was very surprise.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Nick Petragnani. I'm a junior at FM High School. I took this class because I'm so interested in what it's about and I heard it's fun. The dictionary definitions and King Kong activity really shocked me because I never realized how racism was so prealent in the things we look at every day.
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm Kelsey and I'm a junior at FMHS. I thought the dictionary activity was interesting because of the different connotations we subconsciously associate with those words. I think it's not the definitions that need to be changed but the fact that people are called colors.
ReplyDeleteHello my name is Meghan im a junior at fm and i enrolled in this class because all i have heard were great things about this course.I am very interested in going to the other school and expeirencing new things and a new understanding of the different ways of other schools.I am also very interested in learning about the different cultures and how racism plays a major role in the world that we live in today. The dictionary activity was a big eye openor I never knew that the meanings of the two words black and white had those meanings, black always seemed to hold a meaning of dirty, dark, and evil. As the word white had a menaing of pure, innocent, and godly. The king Kong activity was ibnteresting because i have seen the movie before and i never realized the blatent racial refferences until we disscussed it in class. It was funny to me that even in the most recent film there were still many racial references.
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Alexa and I am a senior at FM. I'm taking this course because I want to learn more about other peoples cultures and I feel that the topics we discuss in this class are important for people to talk about. I thought that the King Kong activity was shocking because it shows how racism occurs in many aspects of our lives without us really being aware of it. It really opened my eyes to a lot of things that I wouldn't normally be looking for.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Sarah Rosenbaum and I'm a junior at Fayetteville Manlius High School. I wanted to take Rhetoric of Race because I think it is important to hear other peoples opinions and ideas about race and culture. After watching King Kong I realized that the stereotypes included in the movie were so obvious but could easily be overlooked.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Kelsey Sawyer and I am a senior at FM. I wanted to take this class to be exposed to different cultures and races. I cant wait to meet everyone from Nottingham. My reaction to both King Kong and the definition project is that if you look at something from a different perspective it can change how you view the world.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Katie Sipple. I am a senior at Fayetteville Manlius High School. I enrolled in this class because I wanted to learn about different cultures and experience a day at Nottingham. The King Kong activity was interesting because we were able to realize the hidden stereotypes based on race.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Megan Snyder. I am a senior at FM High School. I enrolled in this course because I heard how great of a class it was and I am interested in learning about other cultures and hearing others opinions. The King Kong activity was shocking because I saw how many racist stereotypes there were in the film.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Ali Pliszka and I am a senior at FM High School. I decided to enroll in this class because friends of mine have taken it and spoke very highly of the class, recommending that I take it. Also I think it would be a good experience to visit another school and see how it differs from my school experiences.
ReplyDeleteMy first reaction to the king kong movie was eye opening because I was unaware of the underlying meanings. I hope this class will help me to be more aware.
Hi, my name Is Kenzie Langkammerer and I am a senior at Fayetteville Manlius High School. I decided to take this course because of my intrest in the conflicts with different groups of race. After being in this course for a couple weeks showed me that it is much more that race. I hope to gain a lot of knowledge from this course and immerse myself in the knowledge that I gain. When we looked up the defenitions for the word black and the word white I was shocked to find how racist the dictionary is. It was right out in the open saying bad was black and white was pure, it was ridiculous. In our culture people are influenced so easily by these things and simple things like defenitions in a dictionary can make up a persons mind without them even realizing it.
ReplyDeleteHey my name is mushaf, im a senior at fm highschool. I took this class to further my perspective on the issue of race as well as learn from the experiences of others. I cannot say i was suprised by the dictionary definitions because there is ambiguity between the actual colors black and white and between the skin color black and white. The king kong activity definitely changed how i viewed that movie and has left me more cautious when watching movies becayse they could be racially charged
ReplyDeleteHey my name is sean wildhack. I took this class to further understand the issues of race in society today. After watching King Kong i realized there is a lot of subtle racism present today. I also think that if kids were to watch the film without looking for the racial aspects they might go unnoticed, i think this is an important class that helps us see racial issues today.
ReplyDeleteHi. My name is Sasha. I join this class because needed an extra credit and I had heard that this class was not only easy but fun. I'm really looking forward to go to FM. And my views on King Kong activity is that even since I was little I always kind of knew that it was racist or racial bias. I never talked about with people, but after actually hearing myself say those words I knew my feelings toward it.
ReplyDeleteI am positive I have posted for this one before but I can't find it anywhere now, so I will post it again.
ReplyDeleteHi!
I'm Joonyong Rhee from FM and I've enrolled to take Rhetoric of Race, because I wanted to open my eyes to different point of views dealing with race. I used to have plenty of race discussions with my dad during car rides, but I didn't feel that it was enough. I've always been intrigued with race issues, and this class was an opportunity to share my thoughts and listen to others. During the King Kong activity, I sensed a lot of hidden stereotypes, such as portraying black people as underpowered and outrageously stereotyping the Asian person with traditional dress that would be in no way typical on a boat. I just thought that the movie was almost offensive. The dictionary definition activity showed the immense amount of perceptions(?) that people get when they hear white or black. They distinguish them like light and night or good and bad, which I feel is a flaw in our society.
